I WAS born with a rare, genetic, medical issue known as metatropic dysplasia (MD). You may not have heard of it because very few people have it. It is characterised by short limbs with limitation of movement, enlargement of joints and usually severe kyphoscoliosis (spinal curvature).
In real-life lingo it means that physically I have a unique and somewhat more complicated past than most.
I have had surgeries, correction for my skeletal form, therapy to manipulate the spine and some of the most inspirational and intriguing experiences of my life.

I have met with special and outstanding surgeons and seen miracles that many thought not possible. I have encountered life-altering examples of people who live beyond the boundaries that many have imposed upon them.
I have also been so gifted as to have a beautiful and loving family, including parents who have given me the basis for a belief in the notion that if you put your aims ahead of your obstacles then you can succeed.
This philosophy has given me the focus and determination to get through multiple operations. It has even inspired my academic achievements, attained while simultaneously having a major medical procedure.
It was while I wore the Halo (a brace that supports the head to allow spinal bones to heal) that I found out how miraculous it had been that doctors had found out about a cervical compression (in a bone in my neck) that could have left me paralysed with one sneeze.
Despite numerous electronic tests firmly stating otherwise, doctors were perplexed to discover I had movement which they could not explain. I knew I would be all right. This conviction came from a series of spiritual encounters and a one-off experience with a miracle man who foretold events that would occur.
Spirit messages have also been given to us when we have needed them the most.
On one occasion, when my mother was waiting for me to be brought out of a particular procedure, she was sitting in a chapel and praying for a positive outcome from the surgery.
At that precise time, my mother felt a gust of wind though she had no explanation for its origin. As she looked about her, a sheet of paper floated down and landed by her feet. On it were written the words: “He is where he is needed”.
It was a private experience that meant so much for my mother and it gave hope when she had asked for it.
I have also learnt about adversity from witnessing others’ experiences, and have found out intriguing but conclusive answers as to why things happened when they did.
